Why it works
The idea behind it.
A long to-do list hides what matters and rarely gets finished, so the day ends with a record of what didn’t happen. Three tasks you can actually finish change that.
The small win matters too. In a study of the daily diaries of knowledge workers, making progress in meaningful work mattered more than anything else to how good a working day felt (Amabile and Kramer, 2011).

In practice
Where it tends to slip.
- Picking a hard task that’s really a project. “Finish the proposal” is a project; “Write the pricing section” is a task.
- Adding a fourth and a fifth task, just in case.
- Skipping the small win because it seems too small to count.
